Christian Songwriting: Lyrical Hooks

Rhyme is not the only mechanism that can be used to enhance the appeal of your lyrics. There are several other devices which, broadly speaking, could be categorised as lyrical hooks.

So what is a lyrical hook? Well, a hook is something which catches or snares. Generally we associate them with fishing, and the idea is that, hopefully, you catch fish with them. A similar principle applies to lyrical hooks, the idea here being to catch the listener's attention, and retain it, to the point where they find it difficult to get it out of their mind.

Naturally, the more hooks you have in the water, the better your chances of actually catching a fish. The parallel applies equally to lyrics; the more hooks you can successfully utilise, the higher your odds of hooking a listener.
